Statement

I work very directly with the material as it is released from the tree. This involves discovering and controlling the emerging wood shapes with mallet and wedge piece by piece. Each cleft shape is drawn from hidden inner-growth from many years. The character is of subtle contours mostly suitable for seating ideas where comfort can be found in gentle curves. The risk and reward of unpredictable results is time consuming, but gradually Ive acquired the ability to choose a tree that might render what I want. On tables I am happy to follow the general convention of buying planks and here my interest has been experimenting with colouring effects combined with tool use.
